Confession time: I was laid off from my new job the other week, less than three months after starting the position. It's a great pivot point for a sitcom or a comedy sketch, but when you're in real life... well, it makes things interesting.

It especially makes things interesting when you switched industries from journalism to advertising especially for the opportunity. And, despite giving 100% to a new job, sometimes work takes unexpected directions. I had the opportunity to work with some amazing people on some great projects and appreciate that a whole lot.

But when that all happened, I did something weird. I swallowed my pride. I reached out to work contacts, I asked my networks on Facebook and LinkedIn to connect me with potential opportunities and now have a slew of job interviews and freelance projects lined up.

Never be afraid to ask people to help when you need it.
